MSG the unsung hero of food

Date April 12, 2012

There was a time when there was a major battle between supporters and those who oppose the use of food additives in food that we eat. But unbeknownst to many from both sides, food that they consider safe do contain the food additive in a form or another without them even knowing about it. In countries/regions of the earth where food is more of a necessity rather than a luxury(who doesn’t eat by the way) it keeps us all fed with the savory flavor of the best food that money can but.
We’re not talking about the thousand dollar plate order of Kobe Beef but cuts from all parts of the bull combined and made into sausages that anyone could appreciate. We all worry about msg when the US education system feeds kids meat treated with pink slime(ammonium) to make it palatable. From bags of chips to cup noodles, most of these products are the culmination of years of use and study regarding the way we eat and how to make food more desirable to more people. Ever wonder why we crave for a bag or two of chips? You could be sure msg has a hand in that and that continues to this day. Sure they have taken out the MSG content in their ingredient tables/charts but they have merely substituted it with another term name which makes it harder to spot. Have you ever scanned the things used in that bag of chips you are about to partake in? anything with glutamate in it is sure to be msg. And that’s a fact!

Skin Tanning the Natural Way – Risky

Date December 10, 2010

tanningbooth.jpgCelebrities have glorified the skin tone which is product of exposure to the sun making it more a fashion statement rather than a measure of their skin’s health. There are tanning lotions which get your skin to a specific color that may be desired but unknown to many, these products have to be used in conjunction with sunscreens for they do not have active UV protection and can be compared to dyes for your clothes allowing equal skin tone to where ever the product is applied. Skin tanning without tanning lotions is becoming dangerous that not many skin care professionals recommend it.

Lotion, Spray or other form? Which is Best?

Skin experts recommend that sunscreen be applied about 30 minutes before exposure to the sun to allow the products time to dry and reach their optimum protection levels. Another skin care product that has become more and more popular, sunscreen wipes which are not a new product but the ease of application has made it more appealing for consumers. The wipes are easier to use which would simply be wiping your neck, face and other exposed skin while the product leaves a protective layer of sunscreen in the process. Those products in lotion form are the best for they are not only loaded with the necessary active sunscreen ingredients but they are also more moisturizing preventing skin from drying out too much which works best. Another nifty innovation from Coppertone is the Quickcover spray which minimizes the chasing especially with kids when you have to apply and reapply sunscreen. You simply tell them to stand still and spray away like painting a piece of wood.

Other New Skin Products from Tested Brands

Date October 10, 2010

sunscreen-lotion.jpgFrom Lancome comes UV Expert 20 sunscreen which contains Mexoryl as the active ingredient while Neutrogena has Heiloplex in its products. The other new skin protection compounds are Avobenzone and Oxybenzone along with the more traditional Titanium dioxide and Zinc oxide (which is seen as the white stuff on the noses of lifeguards and cricket players) which have been in use for a long time to combat these harmful ultraviolet rays that have the potential to damage skin. Most of the older products have a pre-soaking time for they have to given enough time to sink into the skin’s pores for them to offer the best level of protection.

Sunscreen New Formulas from Tested Brands

uvrays.jpgDo you know that sunscreen comes in two varieties when it come to the protection they offer your skin? I didn’t, and as it turns out there are products that protect you from UVA or Ultraviolet Alpha rays (which was previously the most widely accepted type of the sun’s rays known more commonly as Ultraviolet light). Most people like me don’t know that there is also a need for protection from UVB or Ultraviolet Beta rays which can also cause skin damage and in severe cases even cause skin cancer. So when choosing which type to purchase at the drug store or the supermarket, skin care experts recommend getting ones that are labeled to give broad spectrum protection so all the bases are covered.

Your Skin and Air Travel

checkin.jpgSkin Care Products are among the substances that are banned from carry-on baggage and must be checked in with other luggage to be stored in the belly of the plane. This has caused uproar in the thousands upon thousands of passengers who travel on long-haul flights everyday. This is in addition to beverages, toothpaste, suntan lotion, creams, shampoo, hair gels and other liquids are also banned. In the UK, these items used to be known only to airport security and staff but have now been made public to avoid the many incidents of people not being allowed to get on their flights due to having these banned items in their bags. In the US, many such similar items are banned so when traveling on long flights, be sure to slap on a thick coat of that moisturizer to prevent your skin from drying out in the dry cabin air.

More on Winter Skin Protection

Date July 10, 2010

winter1.jpgIf one loves to ski, then it is not uncommon for you to get sunburn though with some precautions the pain and discomfort of the sport can be minimized leaving you with healthier skin. Take regular breaks indoors to minimize the time exposed to the suns UV rays, this can prevent severe sunburn and other problems associated with it. Limit time spent in full sunlight between 10am and 4pm which is when the sun is directly overhead meaning more UV rays. Wear dark colored clothing and long sleeved ones if possible to lower the amount of skin that is exposed to the sun. Use sunscreen and follow the application timeframe to maximize effectivity and choose broad spectrum sunscreen for maximum protection

Winter Skin Protection

Date June 10, 2010

winter.jpgWinter is not only cold but harsh and brutal to your skin. Add up wind, cold weather and UV rays that reflects off the white snow back onto your face it is quite a challenge to maintain the glow of your skin in the winter months. Sun block on most unprotected parts of your body (which should be a small area for you are likely to be a bundle of warm clothing) ensure that the suns rays that do get through are not causing any damage. A hot shower might be appealing but take them for short periods only for they tend to take away the natural oils and lipids from the skins surface leaving it dry as bone. See the dermatologist at once if dry skin, irritation and other skin problems arise to prevent it from spreading and to alleviate the discomfort.

Sun and Your Skin

The sun is vital for the bodys production of certain vitamins and minerals that are vital to our survival. The only problem, man has altered the atmosphere to such extent with pollution to the extent that that atmosphere has been damaged beyond repair. A hole in the ozone layer, which is the layer of our atmosphere that screens harmful UV rays (invisible Light) and reflects it back out into space has developed a hole thanks to CFCs or the products that makes the standard home refrigerator work. These invisible gasses when released into the atmosphere is converted by chemical reactions making it form acids and other nasty stuff that eats away the naturally occurring ozone which as said protects us from harmful radiation. This results in irregular heat patterns thus resulting in more incidence of skin problems. So be responsible and be earth friendly for our very survival depends on it.

Skin Cancer : On the rise

Date March 10, 2010

skinc3.jpg There are many cases of skin cancer that are discovered each year and a fraction of those do lead to death due to many factors. Skin Melanomas, if left untreated can spread and worse infect underlying tissue and cause irreparable damage to the human organs. Early detection and treatment is the only solution so people have to be aware of signs to look for when dealing with this health risk. Reddened itchy skin with sores that do not go away, tenderness of a particular area of skin that is usually exposed to the sun, all these symptoms can be signs of some skin problem and worse a skin melanoma. The condition is curable but as said early detection is the key.
